Behind the camera

About me.

I’m Carl. I take my camera with me on walks, usually with a destination in mind and no real idea what I’ll come home with. The photographs are the things that make me stop along the way.

Photography became a bigger part of my life about five years ago, during a difficult time when I needed something to focus on. I started going out with an old camera. The walks did me good, both mentally and physically, and before long I found I cared just as much about looking closely as I did about reaching wherever I was headed.

Some interests come and go. Photography, like drawing, has stayed with me. It’s changed how I see the world around me: the light in a quiet corner, the shape of a tree, the care that went into a building, or the stories a place holds.

My children are grown now, and I have more room to choose how I spend my days. I started The Quiet Light to give these photographs and their stories a little more room. I’m still learning, still curious, and still finding reasons to stop. If you’ve found your way here, I’m glad to share some of them with you.
